Take a look at just a few of the best beaches close by in Southern Delaware:
Lewes Beach
With a quiet charm like no other, Lewes beach is the perfect escape for a day trip or longer.
There’s ample parking close by to the Lewes Ferry Terminal, or at the opposite end near the Roosevelt Inlet where the Lewes Yacht Club is based. Grab an ice cream from 2 Dips Ice Cream, then walk from one end to the other and admire the ocean before heading into Lewes to take advantage of the local shops, cafes, restaurants, and the Zwaanendael Museum. We’re ideally situated here at The Beacon Inn, just a short walk from the beach!
Rehoboth Beach
The ever-popular Rehoboth Beach is a real treat for the whole family, featuring a picturesque sandy beach along the eastern shore of Delaware. Set just behind the first dunes is a boardwalk where you’ll find all sorts of shops, amusements, and restaurants to enjoy.
There’s plenty of parking at the end of Henlopen Avenue, from which you can make your way south along the beach. Grab a cup of Thrasher’s famous french fries as you make your way down the boardwalk or take a trip further in for more delights.
Whiskey Beach
If you’re after a little history as you go for a beach stroll, give Whiskey Beach your time and you’ll be well rewarded. Not only can you cross through the dunes to get a view of the Atlantic, but you can also make your way north to visit the WWII Artillery Fire Observation Towers.
Parking can be found along Ocean Drive at the Gordon’s Pond end, so once you’ve tired of the beach you can head for a walk around the wildlife area, too.
Broadkill Beach
Just north of the Broadkill River, you’ll find Broadkill Beach, a small community based just a stone’s throw from Lewes where we’re located. This is a quiet beach where you can comb for beach treasures in the sand or you may even spot a horseshoe crab.
For fishers, this is a great spot to do a little fishing undisturbed in the bay – a popular place to find summer flounder in the waters (permits are required for fishing and please check creel limits, http://www.eregulations.com).
Cape Henlopen State Park
From The Point parking lot, you can reach the very tip of Cape Henlopen State Park and the beach that curls up into the bay. (The Point is closed March-September to protect endangered beach nesters, and migratory shorebirds).
This is a great, quiet stretch of beach for those looking to avoid the busier beach towns with plenty of walking, running, cycling and birdwatching to be had along the beach, along the dunes, and in the state park itself. There is a pet-friendly part of this beach, but you must always keep your dog on a leash at all times.
Beach Plum Island State Park
This small area of beach is less known to tourists. Situated between Lewes Beach and Broadkill Beach, it’s a stretch of beach turned into an island by the bay and the estuaries behind. Because of the peaceful, quiet nature of the area, it’s popular with surfers and fishers alike (please check permit restrictions in advance).
Not far from Lewes itself, this spot can be easily reached when using The Beacon Inn as your base!
These are just a few of our top selections for when you’re in Sussex County looking for a beach break.
One thing’s for sure, there’s no better way to start your vacation than with us here at The Beacon Inn. We’re based on East Savannah Road and are happy to take your hotel booking online or over the phone – just speak to our friendly team if you need any assistance.
